LADIES TRIUMPH IN FACE OF ADVERSITY
(March 07, 2010)Uppermill Ladies 2-5 Farsley Celtic Ladies
By James Grayson
The Ladies showed heart, desire, bottle and character to stage a remarkable comeback and bring a little ray of sunshine to the devastated club and secure a massive victory for themselves. 2-0 down on the hour – all hope seemed lost, but, goals from Kerry McLoughlin (2), Abi Morgan (2) and Cheryl Sawyer steered the Celts to 12 points clear at the top of the West Riding County Women’s Second Division. Defeat would have seen Uppermill close the gap to six points with two games in hand, so a loss was unimaginable. Farsley did not make life easy and were poor in the opening exchanges with the home side first to everything. And Uppermill, also looking to bounce back from their 8-1 defeat at Brighouse last week, deservedly took the lead on 24 minutes. Rebecca Fox cut inside down the right wing and fired into the top corner. Farsley could have been further behind before the break, had keeper Michelle James not made a string of superb saves. However, James could do nothing to prevent Fox grabbing her second, 13 minutes into the second half, The Celts’ 100% unbeaten record was crashing to an end. But, the Celts suddenly came alive, although it was the referee who kick-started the fight back. A penalty was given for handball and leading scorer McLoughlin duly converted it with ease. Manager Rob Womersley and assistant Paul Wray then brought on experienced centre-half Kath Raw and the dangerous Fox was immediately stifled by Raw’s speed. Four minutes, following the spot kick, Farsley were level. Hayley Hare’s throw found McLoughlin and the forward finished from close range. Farsley were on top and throwing bodies forward in search for the winner. The goal eventually came with seven minutes remaining and through a solo piece. Morgan kept running on the right wing and found herself inside the area before lashing the ball home. The goal was enough for the three points as Uppermill had thrown the towel in. But, due to the five added minutes of injury time, Farsley were able score twice more. Sawyer firstly headed in from a corner and then Morgan scored straight from a corner on the left side. The final whistle eventually sounded and Farsley were left to celebrate the vital win. The Ladies have nine games left of their season and they entertain West Leeds at Stanningley Park next week.
