LADIES GO TO TOWN
(May 16, 2010)Farsley Celtic 5-1 Harrogate Town
By James Grayson
Farsley Celtic rounded off a magnificent season in spectacular style by defeating local rivals Harrogate Town with ease at Stanningley Park. Hayley Hare and leading scorer Kerry McLoughlin each found the net twice and Kath Raw’s first ever goal for the club completed the rout. Abi Ferriby pulled one back for Harrogate late-on in the final game of the West Riding County Women’s Second Division fixtures. With the chances of an Amaranth victory over Brighouse being unlikely and the fact second-place was secured last Sunday, it was a chance for Rob Womersley’s side to strut their stuff without pressure. And from the word ‘go’, Harrogate were blown away. The first minute had not even ended by the time McLoughlin put the Celts into a 1-0 lead. Farsley were then gifted the opportunity to double the score from the penalty spot and Hare made no mistake. Farsley dominated the proceedings and Hare notched her second before half-time. The result was never in doubt and after energising their batteries during the break, Farsley recorded a fourth of the afternoon. Raw, playing in midfield for the first time, hit a long range effort and with assistance from the crossbar, the ball crossed the goal-line. Harrogate got their one moment of joy with 13 minutes left on the clock when Ferriby capitalised on a defensive mistake to finish into the open goal.
But, Farsley had the last laugh as McLoughlin scored number 53 of the campaign in injury time. Moments later, the referee brought the curtain down on an exciting and memorable season that despite the disappointments of recent weeks has been a massive success. And, if promotion can be rubber-stamped, all wrongs will be righted.
