EARLY GOAL ENOUGH TO YIELD WARRINGTON VICTORY

Farsley AFC 0-1 Warrington Town

By Mark Rawlinson

Warrington Town took advantage of an uninspiring Farsley performance as they snatched a 1-0 victory at a gusty Throstle Nest.

The Wire scored with their first chance of the game as a wind assisted corner from Matty Cross found its way straight into the net.

With the wind behind their backs, Farsley had a number of chances in the second half but were unable to convert any into an equaliser.

The visitors were awarded with a corner ten minutes in which was taken by Cross. The left-footed effort saw Tom Jackson and Antoni Pecora lunge towards the ball but neither of them were able to prevent it entering the goal.

Warrington keeper Chris Oldfield looked as though he may have to come off after a collision with Ben Jones. However there was no substitute keeper so after treatment from the physio, he limped back into action.

Farsley had a chance to hit back on the 24th minute as Simeon Bambrook received the ball back from a short corner and unleashed a shot from 25-yards but the recovering Oldfield was able to parry the ball around the post.

A deflected effort from Lee Madin looked as though it may double The Wire’s advantage but a relieved Pecora was pleased to see the effort bounce just wide of the post.

Warrington were given another chance to extend their lead two minutes before the break following a foul from Jackson. Cross again stepped up to take the set piece but was far less successful as his effort went way wide of the post.

The chances kept falling for Town and in the 68th minute after a free kick had been blocked, Kyle Hamid spotted Pecora off his line and attempted a shot from 25 yards but the looping effort went just over the bar.

AFC had a few chances late on, the first on 75 minutes. The ball was played up to Simeon Bambrook and after controlling, attempted a right-footed effort but with his weaker foot, the shot went wide.

Then with the game entering stoppage time, Bambrook’s corner made its way through a sea of bodies almost a repeat of Cross’ earlier goal, but this time the ball hit the upright. However Tom Jackson was able to have a shot although it was blocked on the line and the visitors held on for victory.
