AXE FALLS DOWN ON FARSLEY
(January 28, 2012)
Lancaster City 4-1 Farsley AFC
By James Grayson
For only the second time this season, Farsley AFC lost consecutive Evo Stik Division One North matches with a bad day at the Giant Axe.
Having fallen behind early-on, Simeon Bambrook pulled a rabbit out of his hat to level the scores until a Alex Kenyon header put Lancaster City back ahead.
Ben Jones then missed a penalty on 47 minutes before an incredible decision from referee Mr Hilton gave Lee Dodgson the chance to effectively seal the game from the spot.
Dodgson did the honours and during injury-time, Dave Swarbrick rubbed the salt into Farsley’s wounds.
But, after receiving heavy flack for the unfortunate 1-0 defeat to Warrington Town in extremely windy conditions, Farsley looked a team down on confidence in the first half.
A deflected Zach Clark shot from outside the box looped over returning ‘keeper Tom Morgan on 18 minutes to give Lancaster the lead.
Farsley huffed and puffed without creating many chances, but somehow found themselves level when Bambrook scored yet another goal of the season contender.
The ball fell to the midfielder on the edge of the penalty area and he superbly volleyed the ball into the bottom corner.
However, Farsley’s joy was short-lived as a corner was failed to be dealt with properly leading to Kenyon heading into the back of the net.
Neil Parsley admitted that he read the riot act at half-time and it clearly fired up his team and within two minutes of the change-over, Farsley were awarded a penalty.
Gareth Grant was shoved to the ground by Anthony Elderton, leaving the referee with little option, but to point to the spot.
However, the ever reliable Jones fired his penalty wide of the post – only his third miss in a Farsley shirt.
Despite the blow Farsley continued to press and were close to equalising when Grant’s teasing cross went begging inside the six-yard box.
But, the hammer blow came in the 70th minute with the decisive penalty.
Returning skipper Mark Jackson was closely marking winger Clark until the Lancaster player spectacularly jumped like an Olympic swimmer to the ground.
Incredibly, despite the obvious theatrics, referee Hilton gave the spot kick and Dodgson did the rest.
The game was lost and in the closing stages, Tom Wood’s cross was latched onto by the experienced Swarbrick with the striker blasting the ball into the top corner.
